Abstrak Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in toddlers, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. The prevalence of ARI continues to increase every year, with an incidence rate reaching 10.2%. The working area of Kawatuna Public Health Center in Palu recorded the highest number of ARI cases, namely 1,945 cases in 2023. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical environmental factors and smoking habits and the incidence of ARI in toddlers in the working area of Kawatuna Public Health Center in Palu. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study was 3,687 toddlers, the number of samples of 108 toddlers was determined using the Slovin formula. Data analysis was carried out using the chi-square test. The results showed that ventilation area (p = 0.000), housing density (p = 0.005), wall type (p = 0.000), floor type (p = 0.000), and smoking habits of family members (p = 0.000) had a significant relationship with the incidence of ARI in toddlers. Physical environmental factors that do not meet health standards and exposure to cigarette smoke increase the risk of ARI. Therefore, recommended prevention efforts include increasing health education, improving environmental sanitation, and increasing family awareness of the dangers of cigarette smoke exposure to toddlers. |
