Abstrak
The shells of meti (Batissa violacea L. Von Lamarck, 1818) contain chitin compounds that need to be modified into chitosan compounds to be used as biomaterial candidates in the pharmaceutical field such as edible film. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical characteristics (solubility, viscosity, molecular weight, morphology and crystallization) of meti mussel shell chitosan (Batissa violacea L. Von Lamarck, 1818) as a biomaterial candidate in the pharmaceutical field. Isolation of chitosan through three stages namely deproteination, demineralization and deacetylation, characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), physicochemical characterization of methi shell chitosan includes solubility, viscosity and molecular weight. SEM test characterization shows the morphology of chitosan has a smooth surface, small size and lump-shaped. XRD testing shows a diffraction pattern with the main and highest peaks at angles 2? = 23,08 °; 26,18 °; 29,32 ° and 33,13 ° the diffraction pattern confirms the structure formed is crystalline. The results of physicochemical characterization testing showed that chitosan was completely soluble in acetic acid with a concentration of 1% and 2%. Viscosity and molecular weight were obtained as 1,08; 1.51; 2,30 cp and 2,3 x 10³; 3,4 x 10³; 5,5 x 10³ kDa, respectively. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that methi mussel shell chitosan has the potential as a biomaterial candidate in the pharmaceutical field.
