This study aims to determine the shear and compressive strength of rattan fiber reinforced composites with HDPE matrix at temperatures of 150°C, 170°C, 190°C, and 210C°. The method used in this study was experimentally using composite materials with rattan fiber as reinforcement and HDPE as matrix. The composite test includes shear testing with the ASTM D5379 standard and compression testing with to the ASTM D695 standard. The results of the shear strength test on rattan fiber composites obtained the highest shear value at 150C°, which was 10.41 MPa, while the lowest value was at 210C°, which was 5.40 MPa. For testing the compressive strength of the rattan fiber composite, the highest value was obtained at 150C°, which was 20.62 MPa, while the lowest value was at 210C°, which was 15.81 MPa. This is because the temperature of 150°C allows the bond between the matrix and the fiber to be stronger so that the compressive and shear strength is better than the temperature of 210°. At a temperature of 210°C the matrix bond that occurs does not completely bind between the matrix and the fiber, this is due to the high temperature, far above the melting point of HDPE so that the fiber undergoes causticity which causes the fiber to not bond properly with the matrix so that the compressive strength decreases. HDPE has a melting point ranging from 120°C to 135°C. Keywords : Rattan fiber, HDPE, Composite, shear strength and Compression.
