| Abstrak Corn is an important commodity in the food system in Indonesia, but in its cultivation techniques, it cannot be separated from pest attacks, one of which is FAW or Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith. There are many types of pests on maize plants that are similar to FAW, thus identifying the Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith insect to determine the characteristics of larvae, pupae, moths and FAW eggs and to know the symptoms of the attack. The purpose of this study was to determine the morphological characteristics of the Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith insect and its attack symptoms on maize (Zea mays). This research took place in January 2020 to February 2020. The sampling of insects was carried out in the Cornondo of the Village of Sidondo and then further tested at the Laboratory of Plant Pests and Diseases (HPT), Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tadulako. The research was carried out in several stages, namely, taking samples of insects in the field, insect rearing or rearing, identification of insects Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith carried out microscopically and macroscopically. The results showed that the Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith insect eggs had a fairly small size, green to brownish, in the 4 th instar and advanced instar larvae they had the special characteristic that there was an inverted "Y" on the head and there were four pinacula forming a square on the abdomen segment to 8, the pupa phase has a size of 1.5 cm and is shiny brown, in the imago phase it has gray front wings and white front wings. |
