Abstrak
Abstract Importance of the work: Apis nigrocincta and A. cerana are important pollinator and live sympatric in Sulawesi Island, however their flight activity and pollen source intake are unexplored. Objectives: To observe the flight activity and its correlation with environmental factors, and to identify the pollen intake of those species. Materials & Methods: The flight activity of both honey bee was observed in Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi Province from 7 am – 4 pm using the scan sampling method. Its correlation with environmental factor was analyzed using general linear models (GLM). Bee pollen was collected, acetolyses, pollen morphology and color were identified. Results: This research found that the flight activity of A. cerana was slightly higher than A. nigrocincta. Based on GLM analysis, light intensity was negatively affected almost all honey bee flight activity. Apis cerana also collected pollen from more diverse plant resources than A. nigrocincta that only collected single type pollen with Cocos nucifera as dominant pollen for both species. There are five types of bee pollen color from those honey bee i.e., dark yellow, dark moderate yellow, very dark desaturated yellow, very dark yellow, and dark orange. The pollen color type analysis showed that the single predominant pollen type could have different pollen color type. Main finding: The flight activity and bee pollen identification results indicated that A. cerana was more adaptable to the environment than A. nigrocincta. This finding suggests the requirement of environmental management for native A. nigrocincta and introduce A. nigrocincta as sympatric species.
