| Abstrak ABSTRACT Representation; Toxic Parenting; Film; Semiotics. Representation is a form of depiction or portrayal of something that exists in real life and is illustrated through a certain medium. This study aims to identify the representation of toxic parenting in the film Kukira Kau Rumah, which discusses authoritarian parents toward a child with a mental illness. The phenomenon of toxic parents is often associated with parenting patterns that can damage a child’s mental health. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotic analysis. The data analysis techniques employed include observation—by directly watching the film—and documentation by capturing scenes that are suspected to contain signs, which are then analyzed using Peirce’s Triangle of Meaning concept: sign, object, and interpretant. The results of the study show that Kukira Kau Rumah represents toxic parenting through several signs, namely sign, object (icon, index, symbol), and interpretant. First, signs of toxic parenting that involve excessive control over the child. Second, signs of toxic parenting that display harsh behavior toward the child. Third, signs of toxic parenting where parents always feel they are right without realizing their mistakes. Based on the findings, there are five scenes in the film depicting toxic behavior with different categories. From the seven existing categories of toxic parenting, three were found in this film: the controllers, the physical abusers, and the godlike parents. Among the five scenes, toxic parenting of the controller type is the most dominant. |
