ABSTRACT Susanti, 2020. "The Pattern of Students' Approaches in Solving Physics Problems on Thermodynamics in SMA Labschool UNTAD Palu". Thesis. Physics Education Study Program, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University. Supervisor: Dr. Supriyatman, M.Pd. The problem solving process undertaken by students in solving physics problems has a different approach pattern. This is reviewed based on the diversity of students' ability levels in solving problems in learning physics. The purpose of this research is to describe the approach patterns of students in solving physical problems in thermodynamic material. This type of research is in the form of qualitative research using a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects in this study were students of grade 11th MIA 3 SMA Labschool UNTAD Palu in the 2019/2020 school year, totaling 20 students and had participated in the physics learning of thermodynamic material. The instruments used were in the form of respondents' selection tests, problem solving tests, and interview guidelines. The respondent selection test contains 24 multiple choice questions with the aim of capturing respondents in this study. While the problem solving test contains 4 essay questions with the aim to describe the tendency of the approach patterns used by students in the process of solving physical problems. Respondents in this study were 6 students. Respondents were selected based on the level of students' ability which is divided into high, medium and low categories with reference to the calculation of standard deviations and the average value of students. Then the respondent is given a problem solving test then the results of the work are analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. In the final stage, the respondent conducts interview activities. Based on the results of research and data analysis shows that the ability to solve students' physics problems on thermodynamic material is in the poor category with an average percentage of 37.33%. As for the pattern of approaches used by students in the physics problem solving process, they are more likely to use two approaches, namely Structured Plug and Chug and Unstructured Plug and Chug. Keywords: Problem Solving Pattern, Problem Solving Approach, Problem Solving.
