This study aims to obtain a description of the ability profile of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 South Banawa in solving social arithmetic word problems. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were three class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 1 South Banawa, each of whom had high, medium and low mathematics abilities. Subjects were chosen based on the consideration that the students selected were communicativestudents. Datacollection techniques in researchusingquestions and interviews. Based on the results of the research, data analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that the profile of the ability of class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 1 South Banwa in solving word problems on social arithmetic material, namely: The stage of understanding the problem, high, medium and low ability students in understanding the problem given by doing repeated reading. Students with high and moderate abilities can identify the information thatis known, but students with high abilities do not write down the things asked in full, while students with moderate abilities also cannot identify the things that are asked in full. Low ability students cannot identify information that is known and asked in full, it can be seen that low ability students do not understand the problem given. The stage of making a problem solving plan, high ability students make good problem solving plans, medium ability students and low ability students cannot make a good problem solving plan. The stage of carrying out the problem-solving plan, students with high abilities using the concept of profit or loss, but do not master the division arithmetic operationssotheydonotcompletethefinalresult.Studentswithabilityarecarrying out problem-solving plans well, but looking for profit or loss and using incorrect formulas, so they don't write down the final results because they don't master the arithmetic operations of division. Meanwhile, students with low abilities at this stage use incorrect formulas, and cannot complete the final results because they do not master the arithmetic operations of division. The stage of re-examining the answers of high, medium and low ability students conducts a re-examination by re-examining the results of the work.
