| Abstrak ABSTRACT Nurmasita Toindeng (A 122 22 023) “Increasing Vocabulary Matery of Grade XI Students at SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk Through Word Grouping Activities”. Thesis, English Education Study Program, Department of Language and Art Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University. It was under Supervisor of Mawardin M Said and Co-Supervisor H. Mochtar Marhum. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of word grouping activities in teaching vocabulary mastery at SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk. The population of this reasearch are grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk. This research samples XI D as the experimental class which consist of 33 students and XI C as the control class which consist 36 students. They were selected by purposive sampling. The researcher employed quasi-experimental research design where the two classes get the Pretest and Posttest. The data analysis indicates that there is significant improvement between the results of Posttest of both classes. The main score of experimental class before the treatment is 40.79 while control class is 44.20. After giving the treatment, the mean score of experimental class in Posttest is 69.88 and the control class is 48.47. It is also shown that the tcounted 5.71 is greater ttable 1.68. It means that the use of the Word Grouping Activity technique is effective in teaching vocabulary mastery for class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk.
