Abstrak
This study aims to find out the difficulties in speaking English and the factors affecting these difficulties among students. The research method used was a qualitative method, with the subjects of the research was the fourth-semester students from the English Education Program at Tadulako University. Questionnaire and interview were used as instruments of data collection. The results of the interview reveal three main difficulties in speaking English experienced by most students. The first is difficulty in expressing ideas. Students often find it difficult to convey their thoughts clearly and coherently. The second is difficulty in using correct grammar. Students felt difficulty in applying correct grammatical rules during conversation. The third is difficulty dealing with anxiety. Many students felt nervous or pressured when speaking in English, which affected their fluency. In addition, the factors influencing these speaking difficulties can be categorized into two main types: linguistic and psychological factors. Linguistic factors include elements such as limited vocabulary, incorrect grammar usage, and unclear pronunciation. On the other hand, psychological factors involve individual aspects such as low self-confidence, low motivation, and anxiety. Based on the analysis of questionnaire, the most dominant factor affecting students' speaking difficulties is limited vocabulary, with the highest percentage of 86.5% or 32 out of 37 students. They reported that they experienced difficulties in speaking due to limited of vocabulary. Keyword: Difficulties in speaking skill, linguistic factors, psychological factors.
