This thesis is entitled “Investigating the Students’ Perception in the Use of Language in the Teaching of English.” Under the supervision of Konder Manurung and Jamiluddin. The choice of language used in teaching English has always been an important consideration since it can affect the classroom atmosphere. The objectives of this research are to describe the students’ perception of the frequency of English used in the learning process, to describe the students’ perception of the use of their native language during the lesson, and to analyze the students’ feelings about using English in the learning process. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were taken from 294 students of SMA Negeri 3 Palu. In collecting the data for this research, the researcher used a questionnaire and an interview. There are three categories of questionnaire; students’ language use in EFL classroom; students’ perception towards language use in the EFL classroom; and students’ well-being during English lessons in the EFL classroom. The data for the questionnaire was analyzed by using simple descriptive analysis in which the data displayed the frequency and percentage of the result while the interviews were analyzed qualitatively by followed Miles and Huberman’s three steps: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion. The findings indicate that the teacher “often” used English in the teaching and learning process; the students rarely used English; and the students are frustrated when they do not understand what the teacher said in English. The finding also indicates that when the teacher mostly used English during the teaching and learning process, the students tend to respond to the teacher in their native language. In addition, the students believe that the use of the native language is helpful since they use it as a tool to learn English and the students feel more comfortable using the native language than English. The findings imply that English and the native language can be used interchangeably based on the topic difficulty during the teaching and learning process. |
