Abstrak
This research aims at developing writing skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Bambalamotu through the use of GBA. Another aims at students achievement in developing writing skills because the process of GBA. The subjects of this research were the students at the grade VIII of SMP Negeri 3 Bambalamotu that consisted of 22 students. This research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) covering plan, action, observation and reflection. This research was carried out into two cycles. The first meeting focused on explanation of the materials through the syntax of Genre-Based Approach; 1. BKOF (Building Knowledge of the Field), 2. MCOT (Modeling Construction of the Text), 3. JCOT (Join construction of the Text) and 4. ICOT ( Independent Construction of the Text). And the second meeting focused on evaluation. The data of this research were obtained from observation, field notes and writing test. The individual test results in cycle 1 showed that 36.36% of the students had not reached the criteria of success because they had not been able to write descriptive paragraphs, while the results of the cycle 2 showed that 72.73% of the students demonstrate that the implementation of the GBA was able to improve students’ writing skills. Students’ problems in writing can be diminished by implementing the stages in the GBA. The building knowledge of the field and the modeling constructing of the text stages improved the students’ vocabulary and knowledge on the topic and context of the text, and their knowledge and ability on the text type including the text structure and language features. The joint construction and the independent construction of the text stages improved the students’ ability in exploring ideas and developing them into a good text. Scores of the students’ performance also indicate improvement in the students’ writing skills through the implementation of GBA.
