Abstrak The purpose of this research is to prove whether or not the implementation of group discussion technique can develop speaking skill in terms of fluency and comprehension of the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Palu. This research applied a quasi-experimental research design which involved experimental and control groups. The sample was selected by purposive sampling; they were class VIII B consisting of 20 students as the experimental group and class VIII C consisting of 20 students as the control group. The technique of data collection was oral test (pre-test and post-test). The experimental group was taught by applying Group Discussion while the control group was taught using conventional method which used in the school. The data were analyzed descriptively. Based on the pre-test of both groups, the researcher found that the students had low on vocabulary, they also usually miss the meaningful sentence, which indicated that their fluency and comprehension was low. Based on the post-test of experimental group, the students acquired new vocabularies and developed their pronunciation to bear a meaningful sentence, it indicated that the fluency and comprehension was developed. It was proved by applying the testing hypothesis. The hypothesis was tested using two criteria: if t-counted is more than t-table, the hypothesis is accepted. Alternatively, the hypothesis is rejected if t-counted is less than t-table. The researcher found that the t-counted 4.3 was higher than the t-table 1.687. It means that the hypothesis was accepted. The researcher concluded that using group discussion can develop students speaking skill. |
