Abstrak ABSTRACT Rifah Zakhiyah (A 122 20 001). This Thesis Entitled Identification of English Needs for Taekwondo Athletes in Palu Through ESP (Research at Taekwondo Family (T-Fly) Club in Kota Palu). English Education Study Program, Postgraduate, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University, under the supervision of Jamiluddin and Aminah. The purpose of this research is to identify the perceptions of coaches/stakeholders and athletes regarding ESP for athlete career development, and to analyze the English language needs of taekwondo athletes. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Respondents in this study amounted to 25 people consisting of 13 coaches/stakeholders and 12 athletes. Based on the findings, coaches/ stakeholders and athletes stated that English has an important role in developing the careers of Taekwondo athletes. The ability to speak English certainly increases the reputation, fame, selling power of an athlete in the eyes of the public and the satisfaction of fans who want to know more about him. In addition, the first analysis regarding the needs of taekwondo athletes, their weaknesses in mastering English where most of the athletes in the club do not yet realize that English language skills are important for their career development while still at junior level. If you look at the comparison of answers between coaches/stakeholders and athletes, the majority of coaches do not know and understand for sure their athletes' English skills, because they have never directly measured their athletes' English skills. While the results obtained from the athletes show that most Taekwondo athletes had interest in English, it is just that they do not have the facilities to develop it where they practice. Therefore, they tended to use Bahasa and only use English vocabulary according to the training conditions. Second, the researcher identified the various aspects they need. Based on the results of the analysis, coaches/stakeholders and athletes agree that there are two skills that are of primary concern to be improved so that athletes can communicate effectively in English, namely listening and speaking skills which are complemented by continuing to increase vocabulary. Third, the researcher analysed the English language learning objectives to be achieved based on listening and speaking skills according to coaches/stakeholders and athletes, namely being able to practice them well when carrying out interactions, such as teaching, discussions or questions and answers. Meanwhile, the purpose of learning reading and writing skills is to enable them to understand various contents of the manual and written messages correctly.
