Abstrak
“An Analysis of Difficulties in Pronouncing English Sounds for Indonesian Speakers of English”, under supervisions of Hasan Basri and Sudarkam R. Mertosono. This research aimed to find out what sounds are the most difficult to be pronounced and what factors caused the difficulties in pronouncing English sounds for Indonesian speakers of English. It employed a descriptive method that consisted of two kinds of instruments, there were recording that consisted of 58 items and 10 items of questionnaire. The respondents of the research were the English teachers of SMK Negeri 2 Palu, MTs Al-Haq, MTs DDI, MTs Darul Iman, and MTs Lasoani Palu. There were 30 respondents participated in questionnaire, 15 of them participated in pronouncing the available list of words. The data were collected through questionnaire and recording, and were analyzed qualitatively and quantatively. The result of the research showed that the English consonant sound which is the most difficult to pronounce by the Indonesian speakers of English is /?/ sound. In individual word, the percentage of mispronunciation is 93,3% in medial position and 100% in final position. Further, it also happens when the words are inserted in sentence. The percentage of mispronunciation is 100% in medial and final position. Besides that, the result of the research through questionnaire showed that the factor caused the Indonesian speakers of English found difficulties to pronounce the English consonants are: (1) Motivation, (2) Less exposure to the target language, (3) influence of spelling and the way it is pronounced, (4) Sound system differences between L1 and L2, and (5) Age.
