This study was conducted to determine students’ ability in grammar, particularly in the use of past forms, as well as the improvement of students’ writing skills. This research employed a quasi-experimental design. The population of this study consisted of all tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Palu, with a total of 190 students. The instruments used in this research were multiple-choice and essay tests to measure students’ ability in changing verbs from Verb 1 to Verb 2 and in constructing correct sentences. This study involved two groups, namely the experimental class and the control class, each consisting of 23 students. Based on the pre-test results, the mean score of the experimental class was 78.91, while the control class obtained a mean score of 80.21, indicating that the initial abilities of both groups were relatively similar. After the treatment was implemented, the posttest results showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased to 87.39, while the control class obtained a mean score of 81.19. The results of the study showed that students in the experimental class achieved better learning outcomes than those in the control class. Therefore, the use of group work in learning proved to be effective in improving students’ understanding of regular and irregular verbs in writing. Keywords: grammar, writing skills, past form. |
