| Abstrak This undergraduate thesis, entitled “Sentence Patterns, Types, and their Communicative Functions in Board Game Rule Books for Educational Purposes,” was conducted under the supervision of Siska Bochari and Wahyudin. This study examines sentence patterns, sentence types, and their communicative functions in English board game rule books, with a focus on their potential use for educational purposes. The study is grounded in the importance of clear and effective instructional language in rule books, which function as practical non-academic texts and can support English language learning by exposing learners to a range of sentence structures. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected through documentation of sentences from selected sections of educational board game rule books, chosen through purposive sampling. The analysis is based on Quirk et al.’s seven sentence pattern framework and Searle’s speech act theory, while sentence types are classified into simple, compound, complex, and compound–complex forms. The findings show that all major sentence patterns proposed by Quirk et al. are present, with a full range of sentence types also identified. In terms of communicative function, assertive sentences are used to describe game elements and conditions, while directive sentences dominate the instructional sections, guiding player actions and ensuring effective rule delivery. |
