Abstrak The purpose of this study was to determine whether self-talk has an effect on the English speaking ability of students in the 2021/2022 intake of the English study program at Tadulako University. This study uses a quantitative research design, using a correlational design, this type of research design is to reveal the relationship and strength of the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable. The population of this study was 3rd year students /batch 2021-2022 of the English study program at Tadulako University. using simple random sampling, 30 students were selected. Data collection in this study used a questionnaire to examine students' self-talk and an English speaking test to measure how far students' speaking ability was. Researchers analyzed the data using SPSS 30.0. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between self-talk and students' speaking ability. This correlation is indicated by a Pearson correlation value of 0.883, which means that there is a very strong correlation between the two variables. The t-count value of 9.975 is greater than the t-table of 2.048. This means that students' self-talk can affect the development of speaking skills. The higher the positive self-talk that students have, the better their speaking skills. Conversely, the higher the negative self-talk that students have, the lower their speaking skills. Based on this fact, it can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, meaning that the visual learning style strategy is effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery. |
