Abstrak
Wafiq Nur Asfia (A12121016) The Implementation of Word Chain Game to Improve the Eighth Grade Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at SMP Negeri 17 Palu. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the implementation of Word Chain Game in improving the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 17 Palu, especially in the mastery of nouns and verbs. The main focus in this study includes three aspects of vocabulary mastery namely meaning, use and spelling. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The sample was selected through a simple random sampling technique. That is class VIII B as an experimental group consisting of 28 students and class VIII C as a control group consisting of 27 students. The instruments used were pre-test and post-test to measure students' vocabulary skills before and after treatment. The data was analyzed using Mann-Whitney test with the help of SPSS software version 24 because the data was not normally distributed. The results of the analysis showed a significant value (sig 2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05, which means there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Word Chain Game is significantly effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery, especially in the aspects of meaning, use and spelling. The findings are expected to contribute to teachers, students, and other researchers in developing interesting and fun vocabulary learning strategies in English classes.
