Abstrak
This research aims to determine whether the application of role-play can develop the speaking skills of students in grade VIII of SMP Negeri 2 Palu. In this study, researcher used a quasi experimental design. By taking the criteria of students' background knowledge, the researcher took the superior class, namely class VIII D as the control group and class VIII E as the experimental group, the number of the two groups is 64. To collect data in this study, researcher conducted two tests, namely pretest and posttest. The average Pretest score for the experimental group is 1.84 and the control group is 1.96. The average Posttest score for the experimental group is 3.12 and the control group is 2.25. After that, the data are analyzed using the t-test formula with degrees of freedom (df) 62. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the t-counted value is 2.09 and the ttable value is 1.67. This proves that the application of role-play can develop the speaking skills of students in class VIII of SMP Negeri 2 Palu.
