Abstrak The objective of this research is to prove if the use of talking chips can develop speaking skills of grade XI students at SMA Negeri 7 Palu. This research used pre-experimental design involving one group as the experimental group. The sample for this research was XI 1 with 36 students as the experimental group selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The pretest was used to measure students' speaking abilities before treatment and the posttest was used to measure students' speaking abilities after treatment. The data analysis indicates that there is a slightly significant increase between the pretest and posttest results. The student's mean score before given treatment was 31.52. After giving the treatment, the mean score of the students in posttest was 49.09. By applying a significance level of 0.05, the researcher found that the value of the t-counted (6.89) was higher than the t table (2.037). In conclusion, the use of talking chips in teaching speaking was effective in developing students’ speaking skills of grade XI students at SMA Negeri 7 Palu. Based on these results, it can be concluded that talking chips can be applied by teachers in teaching and learning process as one of effective learning media for developing students' speaking skills.
