Abstrak The students still face difficulties in pronouncing English diphthongs. This is because some English sounds do not exist in Indonesian. The students do not know when to pronounce the diphthongs based on the type and position. Internal and external factors make it difficult for students to pronounce English diphthong sounds correctly. The objective of this research is to find out type of diphthongs is more difficult for the students to pronounce, to find out the most position of diphthongs made by students, and to find out students’ difficulty to pronounce English diphthong sounds. This research is designed in quantitative descriptive. The data are collected by oral test and questionnaire. The researcher found 97 errors in closing type and 191 in centering type of diphthongs uttered by the students. The most difficult position of diphthongs in their pronunciation is centering position (e?, ??, ??). There are five factors that is the reason of students' difficulty in pronouncing English diphthong sounds. |
