Abstrak
This research aims at providing that the technique of scaffolding talk can be applied to develop speaking skill of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Palu. This research applied quasi experimental design with non-equivalent control group. The samples of this research were the grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 2 Palu; VIII C with 32 students as the experimental class and VIII D with 32 students as control class that selected by using random sampling technique. The data were collected by using oral pretest and posttest that conducted at first meeting and last meetings. Then the treatment was only given to the experimental class. The pretest was administered to measure the students’ speaking skill before the treatment, while the posttest was administered to measure the students’ speaking skill after treatment. The result of the pretest shows that the mean score of the experimental class is 35.68, while the control class is 38.03 the scores increased on the posttest 57.03 for the experimental class and 41.96 for the control class. The data were analyzed statistically using 0.5 level of significance and 62 degree of freedom. Furthermore, the result of data analysis shows that t-counted = 3.11 are greater than the t-table 1.670 it indicates that the research hypothesis accepted. It can be concluded that the use of scaffolding talk technique can be applied to develop speaking skill of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Palu. Based on these results, it implies that scaffolding talk technique can be applied by teachers in teaching and learning process as one of effective technique to develop speaking skill, especially for junior high school.
