Abstrak CamScanner ABSTRACT Speaking is one of the most important and challenging skills to master when learning English as a foreign language (EFL). However, the students in Indonesia who study English have yet to attain the requiredlanguage proficiency, most students continue to have issues with their ability to speak accurately, fluently, and comprehensibly. This research aims to identify the challenges in speaking English and explore the factors contributing to these difficulties. To conduct the study, a mixed-method research design was employed. The population consisted of 121 eighth-grade students from SMP Neger 15 Palu, distributed across four classes. Using purposive sampling, the researcher selected a sample of 27 students, representing 22% of the total population. Data collection involved the use of a questionnaire and interviews as research instruments. Upon analyzing the gathered data, the results indicated that eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Palu faced various difficulties in speaking English. The most prevalent challenges were related to affective factors, constituting 42% of the responses, whereas instructional difficulties were the least reported, accounting for only 8% of the responses. Additionally, the findings highlighted several factors influencing students' speaking abilities, including feelings of anxiety and shyness, a lack of vocabulary, and the absence of a supportive school environment. |
