Abstrak
The researcher focused on the use of Kaili folktales to increase students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 20 Palu. The research question of this research was can the Kaili folktales increase students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 20 Palu. The research study aimed to investigate whether or not using the Kaili folktales can increase the reading comprehension of the ninth grade students at SMP Negeri 20 Palu. The type of research was a pre-experimental design. This research employed quantitative method including pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this research was the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 20 Palu. The population was 87 students. The total number of the sample was 29 students in class IX B. The sampling technique in this research was purposive sampling. The instrument of the research was a test. The researcher gave pre-test and post-test to the students. The data analyzed by using SPSS 22. The findings of this research indicated that the use of Kaili folktales increased students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 20 Palu. The mean score of students in the pre-test was lower than the mean score in the post-test (34.221<62.028). The researcher observed that the p-value was 0.00, which was less than the alpha value of 0.05, confirming that p<? (0.00<0.05). Therefore, the researcher concluded that the use of Kaili folktales could increase students’ reading comprehension. Key words: Reading Comprehension, Kaili Folktales, Pre-experimental
