Abstrak Pronunciation pertains to the skill of correctly articulating words or phrases in a given language. Nevertheless, numerous students still struggle with the proper articulation of specific sound symbols in English, particularly fricative sounds. The objectives of this study are to identify the fricative sounds that pose difficulties for students, pinpoint the most prevalent mispronunciations among these fricative sounds (specifically, V, ?, ð, and ?), and categorize the predominant error types in the pronunciation of challenging fricative sounds. A group of 40 students majoring in English Education Department were chosen through purposive sampling to serve as participants. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach, utilizing tests and audio recording for data collection. Subsequently, the data was subjected to basic statistical analysis through the use of Excel. The findings revealed that among the nine fricative sounds considered, V, ?, ð, and ? were the most challenging for students. Notably, the fricative sounds that students most frequently mispronounced were ð (with 94 instances of errors) and ? (with 99 instances of errors). When applying Dulay's Taxonomy of error analysis, the errors were classified into four primary categories: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The error breakdown for this research includes 12 cases of omission errors, 14 instances of addition errors, 48 cases of misformation errors, and 121 instances of misordering errors. It can be concluded that the most common error made by students is related to misordering. |
