Abstrak This research aimed at finding out if using fable stories as a media was effective in improving vocabulary mastery of seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Sigi. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design and random sampling tecnique to draw the samples of this research. There were 54 students of seventh grade of SMPN 5 Sigi participated in this research, related to 27 for VII A as experimental group and 27 for VII B as control group. In this study the data were collected by using pre-test and post-test. The result of the data show that the mean score of pre-test in experimental group (46.66) is lower than the mean score in control group (47.66), meanwhile the mean score of post-test in experimental group (65.80) is higher than the post-test in control group (54.32). The researcher calculated the t-counted is 3.354 is higher than t-table which is 1.674 with DF = 53, it means that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and (H0) was rejected. In other words, the use of fable stories as a media in teaching vocabulary mastery is effective. It implies that the implementation of the fable stories can be implemented by the teacher as media in teaching vocabulary especially at SMP Negeri 5 Sigi.
