Abstrak
This research aims at finding out The use of Scanning Technique to Teach Reading Comprehension to The Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 7 Palu. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental research design by using cluster random sampling techniques to get the sample. The instruments of data collection were pretest and posttest. The pretest was used to measure the prior knowledge of the students, and the posttest was used to measure the effectiveness of the scanning technique in teaching students’ reading comprehension after the treatment. The t-test was analyzed to compare the mean scores of both the experimental and control groups. There is a significant difference in score between the experimental group (71,07) and the control group (57,64). The level of significance was set at 0.05 with 54 degrees of freedom (df = 28 + 28 – 2 = 54). The result of data analysis indicates that t-counted (14,67) is higher than t-table (2.00488). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. It was concluded that the use of the scanning technique in teaching students' reading comprehension in descriptive text broadened their vocabulary and helped them identify specific information, especially the main idea in the text. Thus, the use of scanning techniques is effective to teach reading comprehension to the eighth grade students of SMPN 7 Palu. Keywords: Teach, Reading Comprehension, Scanning Technique
