| Abstrak Novela Ananda (2023). This skripsi entitled An Analysis of Self Confidence on Speaking of The Ninth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu, Skripsi, English Education Study Program Department of Language and Art Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University, under the supervision of Ferry Rita and Hastini. This research aimed to investigate the self - confidence on speaking of ninth grade students, specifically students? self - confidence in speaking English from junior high school 9 Palu in year 2022/2023. This research is conducted based on main problems which are 1) Does self – confidence affect on students? speaking ability? 2) What are the factors that influence students? lack of self – confidence in speaking? To answer those questions, the researcher collects the data from 30 students. In this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher gave students a questionnaire with twelve questions and also gave interview questions to students. The results that the researcher has done in ninth grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu are self–confidence works on students? speaking ability. Factors that caused student's lack of confidence are afraid of making mistakes when they speak, they still have lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar, shyness, nervous, and feel of some bad feelings. In conclusion, self– confidence indeed affect students? speaking ability. This study is expected to contribute in developing students? speaking ability and to solve students? problem by knowing what are their in speaking and what factors that contribute to their unconfident. Moreover, this study also may help teacher on how to treat students so that they will be able to participate actively in class without being constraint with self – confidence.
