Abstrak This study examines the effectiveness of Mnemonic Keyword Method in teaching vocabulary mastery to junior high school students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design involving two groups. This is a-quantitative research with 52 grade eight students as the sample. Students were divided into experimental group (n = 26) and control group (n = 26). The research instrument was test in the form of multiple choice, matching tests, and essays. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to both groups to measure students’ vocabulary mastery. Yet, the experimental group was the only one receiving the treatment. The data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and shows a significant increase in the vocabulary scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. The experimental class increased from 54.42 to 75.58, and the control class increased from 57.31 to 68.08. Using the degree of freedom (df) of 50 and the significance level of 0.05, the researcher found that the value of t-counted was 3.42. This indicated that the hypothesis is accepted. Thus, Mnemonic Keyword Method is effective in improving vocabulary mastery of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 19 Palu. |
