Abstrak Sukmawati, (A 121 18 238). “The Implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activity to Improve Reading Comprehension of Eight Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Baras”. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Department of Language and Arts, English Education Study Program, Tadulako University, under the supervision of Mukrim and Anjar Kusuma Dewi. The aim of this research is to find out whether or not the implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) method can improve the reading comprehension of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 1 Baras. The researcher used quasi-experimental design by involving two groups: experimental and control group. The sample was 26 students from class VIII D as the experimental class and 17 students from class VIII C as control class. The research instruments are multiple choice tests and essay. In data collection, both groups were given the same pre-test and post-test . Besides, treatment was only given to the experimental class. The data were analyzed statistically in order to measure the difference between the score. The results showed an increase between the pre-test and post-test results. The average score of experimental class increased from 50.88 to 68.96, and the control group class increased from 49.65 to 56.47. Consulting the t-table value by applying the degree of freedom (df) 40 and 0.05 level of significance, the researcher finds that the value of t-counted is 5.36. The result of the data analysis shows that the hypothesis is accepted where t-counted is higher than t-table. In other words, Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) can improve the reading comprehension of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Baras.
