Abstrak Project based learning promotes student-centered learning through projects and assignments. VIII graders of Ki Hajar Dewantara class at SMP Negeri Model Terpadu Madani used Project based learning as a teaching method for the speaking class and actual English subject class. The research aimed to investigate and identify EFL learners‘ perception on Project based learning in speaking class. This research has two objectives. The first objective of the research was to find out the challenges students faced in the implementation of PBL in speaking class and the second objective was to find out the benefits and speaking achievement in the implementation of PBL in speaking class. To answer the research question, the researcher conducted a qualitative research methodology. In order to gather data, a questionnaire, an interview, and an observation are used. The research involved thirty students of eigtht graders of Ki Hajar Dewantara class and five of them were taken as interview participant. The findings showed, the challenges of Project based learning in speaking class were nervous when it comes to presentation, lack of pronounciation, lack of team work, and students confusion‘s on material. In addition, the other finding revealed that the benefits of implementation and speaking achievement of project based learning in speaking class can affect students‘ improvement in terms of public speaking skill, can enhance their communication and collaboration skill, in terms of comprehension the project – based learning can help students‘ to speak fluently, pronouncing English word well, expand vocabulary mastery, understand the use of grammar. Moreover, the implementation of PBL in speaking class is either gave challenges or benefits and speaking achievement toward students. Key Terms: Project – based learning, Speaking class, EFL Learner |
