Abstrak ABSTRACT Sriyanti, A 121 18 210. Teachers’ strategies in encouraging self confidence of the eighth grade students of SMPN 14 Palu in speaking English. Skripsi. The objective of this research is to find out the strategy used by the English teacher in encouraging students' self-confidence in speaking English and to find out the students’ perception of the strategy used by the English teacher in encouraging their self-confidence in speaking English. This research is qualitative research. The subject was selected by using Snowball technique. The subject of this research was the English teacher who taught at the eighth grade level of SMPN 14 Palu and the students in VIII A, five selected students had an interview with the researcher to find out their perception of the strategy that the English teacher used. Techniques of collecting the data are observations, interviews, and documentation. The researcher used technique of analyzing the data from Miles and Huberman, consist of data reduction, data displayed, and verification. The result of this research is the teacher who taught at the eighth-grade level of SMPN 14 Palu used the presentation as a strategy to encourage students' self-confidence in speaking English. The results showed that presentations practices the students to be brave and accustomed to appearing in public, through the presentation the teacher tried to build students' self-confidence by giving them a chance to do the preparation before the students perform. The teacher also provide motivational feedback or rewards by give the students verbal and nonverbal supports. It expectedly reduces the students’ anxiety and fosters their self-confidence. The result also showed that students’ responses toward the strategy used by the teacher reveal a positive attitude as they responded that the strategy helped them to speak. The students also argue it challenged them to be more active in the classroom, and finally, they felt enjoy and be confident during the teaching and learning process in the classroom.
