| Abstrak The objective of this research is to investigate students difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of MA Al-Khairaat Kalangkangan Tolitoli in speaking English. The research design was descriptive. The subject of this research was 24 students of class XI MIA 1. The instruments used to collect data are questionnaires and interviews. The result of this study showed that the students of MA Al-Khairaat Kalangkangan Tolitoli had difficulties faced in speaking such as linguistic and non linguistic. In linguistic problem most of the students had problem with lack of vocabulary, then followed by poor in grammar and poor in pronunciation. Students also had problem in non linguistic such as not being confident to speak, not being used to talk in class, afraid of making errors and afraid of being mocked by friends. For linguistic problem there are some ways that students do to overcome their problems in learning English, according to Hidayanti (2014) they are: memorizing vocabularies, read novel and English news to find new words, memorize them some words after having prayed, practicing more and more with friends, listening to the music and watching movie to learn how to pronounce words in appropriate pronunciation. The solution for nonlinguistic problem according to Kubo (2009) to build students’ confidence to speak English, teachers can provide regular opportunities to practice proper pronunciation and intonation, and to converse freely. By doing this, students will experience a greater sense of ability to speak English. Keywords: speaking, students, problem |
