ABSTRACT Yuliana H. Gobel, A 121 18 162. Students’ Difficulties in Reading Comprehension at the Second Grade of SMAN 5 Palu. Skripsi. English Education Study Program. Language and Arts Education. Under the Supervision of Darmawan and Budi. The objective of this research is to investigate the students’ difficulties and causes of the difficulty in reading comprehension at the second grade of SMAN 5 Palu. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was given a test to twenty students of XI MIPA 7 and five selected students were interviewed to examine the causes of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension. The technique of data collection consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or verification. The result of the research shows that the majority of the second-grade students of SMAN 5 Palu, found difficulties in identifying main idea, understanding vocabulary, making inference, locating reference, and detail information. The most difficult aspect encountered by the students of SMAN 5 Palu was finding locating reference, because the located reference was difficult to find. In addition, based on the students responses in the interview, the researcher found two factors causing the students difficulties in English reading text, internal and external factors. Internal factors included difficulty in understanding long sentences, lack of knowledge of strategies in reading comprehension, and difficulty in concentration, while external factors include house environment and school environment.
