| Abstrak Akmal A12118132. “Exploring Vocabulary Size of Grade VIII Students at SMPN 1 Sindue Tobata Donggala”. Thesis. English Education Study Program Department of Language and Art Education. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Under the Supervision of Mawardin M. Said and Afrillia Anggreni. The aim of this research is to explore vocabulary size of the grade VIII students of SMPN 1 Sindue Tobata Donggala. This research used mixed methods design, that uses two class. The population if this research was the grade VIII students of SMPN 1 Sindue tobata, which consisted 42 students. The researcher used test and interview as the research instruments. The steps to analyze the data are to calculate the average score of each size and then percentage of the average score. The results show that percentage of average score at 2000 word level 27%, 3000 word level is 28%, and 5000 word level is 19%. In conclusion, the grade VIII students at SMPN 1 Sindue Tobata lack vocabulary in frequency word at 2000, 3000, and 5000 word level. The vocabulary students lack is adjectives. While the results of interview show that there are 2 factors cause students’ difficulties in mastering vocabulary, namely internal and external factors. Internal factors are lack strategy of mastering vocabulary, limited vocabulary stock, and lack of students’ interest, while the external factors are media and technology, the students’ environment such as family support.
