FKIP Tadulako University, supervisors (1) Mukrim (2) Mashuri. Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill that plays a significant role in students’ academic success, particularly in English language learning. However, many students at SMP Negeri 21 Palu face challenges in reading comprehension, such as low motivation, limited vocabulary, and difficulty understanding English texts. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of using folklore as a medium to improve the reading comprehension skills of eighth- grade students. Folklore, which consists of culturally rich stories, proverbs, and traditional narratives, offers engaging content that reflects moral values, real-life conflicts, and cultural wisdom. In alignment with the Kurikulum Merdeka, which promotes student-centered and literacy-based learning, folklore can serve as an inclusive and meaningful tool to enhance students’ comprehension and character development. The study focuses on literal comprehension, including identifying main ideas and supporting details, through the use of selected folklore texts. The findings of this research are expected to provide valuable insights for students, teachers, and future researchers, contributing to the development of more effective reading strategies and culturally relevant teaching methods.
