This research aimed to identify the problems faced by grade X students in learning English vocabulary at SMAN 1 Palasa Parigi Moutong, focusing on Grade X C students as the research subjects. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, involving 29 students out of 153 students as samples. The instruments used in this study were a questionnaire consisting of 13 questions and an interview with 8 questions. The findings revealed five main problems: (1) difficulties in memorizing long and complex vocabulary, indicating limited memory capacity and a lack of effective learning strategies; (2) difficulties in translating English texts due to limited vocabulary mastery, insufficient grammatical understanding, and an inability to comprehend sentence context; (3) Problems in spelling English words caused by differences between pronunciation and spelling; (4) pronunciation difficulties, particularly due to the presence of silent letters and the inconsistency between spelling and pronunciation; and (5) challenges in using vocabulary correctly in sentences, particularly in selecting appropriate verb tenses and prepositions. Furthermore, students’ understanding vocabulary meaning tended to be superficial, as they often relied on memorizing dictionary definitions without grasping contextual usage. These findings shows that students' mastery of vocabulary still needs to be improved thoroughly, both in the aspects of remembering, spelling, pronunciation, comprehension, and using vocabulary in the right context. Therefore, a more contextualized, integrative, and sustainable learning approach is needed in teaching English vocabulary at the secondary school level.
