The aims of this research were to analyze the functions of teacher’s code- switching, students’ perceptions of teacher’s code-switching, and effect of code- switching used by a teacher on students’ understanding in teaching learning English process. This research was conducted through descriptive qualitative approach.The researcher used purposeful sampling technique to determine the research subject. It was conducted at SMAN 9 Palu with 1 English teacher and 26 students as the research subject. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, questionnaire and interview. The researcher used data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing or verification in analyzing the data. The research findings reveald that first, the teacher employed three distinc of code switching functions: topic switch, affective function, and repetitive function. Second, the most of students showed favorable attitudes on the utilization of code switching by the teacher throughout English learning. Third, the use of code switching by the teacher in the English learning gives a positive effect in providing a positive learning environment, and facilitating the students who have limited of English language proficiency.
