ABSTRACT Wilyaningsi (A 121 17 264). “A Descriptive Study on the Use retelling story technique to Improve students speaking skill. Skripsi. English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Mochtar Marhum. This study is a Library Research Design which aims at describing five previous studies on the application of retelling story in classes of speaking skill and the effect of retelling story technique on the students’ speaking skill at different academic levels. The technique of retelling stories is described as a collection of pre-retelling activities, during retelling activities, and post-retelling activities to help students understand, learn, and enjoy the ability to speak. The results of the analysis revealed that five different researcher at two different levels applied the retelling story technique in five different studies across three retelling practices, pre-retelling, during retelling, and post-retelling activities, which were often referred to before, during, and after retelling activities.The application of this strategy was not only done by depending on this technique itself, but also done with the help of various supporting media and method, such as funny story and picture series. Based on the second research question, the ability of the students to speak after applying the retelling story technique, it was found that all the students at different academic levels experienced improvement in their speaking skills. The students were stimulated to be involved and have self-confidence in speaking to that degree. The Findings imply that used retelling story in teaching speaking skill give positive effect to the students and the statistics of the findings found and described from the secondary data sources support the students’ improvement on speaking skill. To that extent, the students were stimulated to be active and independent in retelling the story they dealt with. Keywords: Retelling story technique, speaking skill.
