Abstrak ABSTRACT Waindra Batauga, A 121 17 249, 2022. The Effectiveness of Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) in Developing Vocabulary Mastery of Grade Nine Students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Sudarkam R. Mertosono. The objective of this research is to find out if vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS) effective in developing vocabulary mastery of grade nine students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The researcher used the pre-experimental research design with 23 students selected by using the cluster random sampling technique. The experimental group was treated by applying a vocabulary self-collection strategy. The instruments of the data collection were pre-test and post-test. The result of the data analysis showed there was a significant improvement in the score of the posttest after giving treatment. It can be seen at the mean score of pretest was 61.28 and the mean score of posttest was 70.52. By applying 0.05 level of significance and 22 degree of freedom (df), as can be seen that the value of t-counted is 4.69 and t-table is 1.717. The t-counted value is higher than t-table value, which meant that the research hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, applying Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy is effective to develop vocabulary mastery of grade nine students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu.
