| Abstrak ABSTRACT Ni Ketut Yuniasti, A 121 17 215, An Investigation of Speaking Difficulties Encountered by the Eighth Grade Students’ of SMP Negeri 9 Palu. Skripsi, under the supervision of Anshari Syafar. This research focuses on students’ difficulties with speaking skills. The objective of the research is to find out the difficulties in speaking skills and to find out the causes of speaking difficulty in speaking skills encountered by the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu. The research method used in this research is the qualitative research method by applying conversation analysis. The sample of this research is the eighth-grade students’ of SMP Negeri 9 Palu was chosen by convenience sampling. Questionnaires and interviews were as the tools of data collection. From the data questionnaire and interview findings, linguistics difficulties are the most dominant difficulties faced by the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu with a mean percentage of 80% difficulties of grammar, 90% difficulties of vocabulary, and 85% difficulties to pronounce English words. It is followed by psychological difficulties with the mean percentage of 70?ar of mistake, 70% anxiety, and 80% shyness. The causes of speaking difficulties encountered by the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu are less vocabulary, shyness, worried about making mistakes, low motivation, and didn’t understand the meaning of words in English. The linguistics and psychological difficulties are the most dominant difficulties encountered by the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu.
