Abstrak ABSTRACT This study aims to find out whether or not the use of Herringbone technique is effective in teaching reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Rio Pakava. The research applied quasi-experimental design. The samples of this study were 21 students in class VIII A as the experimental group and 21 students in class VIII C as the control group. They were selected by purposive sampling technique. The research instrument utilized to collect the data was a test consisted of pre-test and a post-test. The experimental group's mean pre-test score was 41.59 (poor), while the control group's was 45.08 (poor). The mean score of the post-test for the experimental group was 68.89 (fair) and control group was 58.09 (poor). The result of the test was analyzed statistically by applying T-test using degree of freedom (df) 40 and 0.05 of the significance level. This research indicates that the t-counted value (5.12) is higher than the t-table (1.684). In other words, the hypothesis of this research is accepted. In conclusion Herringbone technique is effective to be applied in teaching reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Rio Pakava.
