Abstrak ABSTRACT NURUL FITRIA (A 121 17 120). This skripsi is entitled “Needs Analysis- Based ESP Course Design for Accounting Students at SMK Negeri 1 Banawa”. English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tadulako University, 2021.(Supervised byAbdul Kamaruddin). The objectives of this research were to find out: (1) the needs of accounting students in learning English at SMK Negeri 1 Banawa to be used for designing an ESP course; and (2) the suitable English course guideline (course rationale, course material, methodology, and assessment) for accounting students at SMK Negeri 1 Banawa. This research used descriptive qualitative research method. The participants were 22 students of Grade XI of Accounting 1 at SMK Negeri 1 Banawa, chosen through purposive sampling.The research instruments were google form questionnaire and phone interview that each instrument contained of open-ended and close-ended questions. The questionnaire consisted of 7 parts (A-G) with the total was 51 items. Besides, there was phone interview which consisted of 10 questions. The data of this research was analyzed in four stages; namely coding, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or interpretation.The researcher found that the needs of accounting students at SMK Negeri 1 Banawa in learning English were in accordance with the teaching concepts of English for Specific Purposes. The students stated that the language skill they need the most was speaking. Related to speaking, the students were lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, and self-confidence to speak in English. In line with the students’ lack, the students wanted their speaking skill better. Based on the result of the students’ needs, the researcher suggested a set of English course guideline which consisted of four components. The first was course rationale that covered target learners, course content, and objective of course. The second component was course materials related to accounting and about daily life. The third was methodology that most of students wanted, namely discussion and practice. The last component was assessment that consisted of five kinds; they were portfolio, journal, interview, observation, and self/peer assessment. The teacher could use one assessment only or more in one time for assessing based on the learning situation and the students’ needs.
