Abstrak
This research aims to find out correlation between students’ habit of listening to English songs and speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Labschool Tadulako Palu. 30 participants were assigned to fill questionnaire for collecting data of habit of listening to English songs. Then, they were asked to speak with a variety of topics: self-introduction, hobby, accepting and rejecting invitation, apologizing and permission, and borrowing book, to collect speaking score. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The result shows that the correlation coefficient between students’ habit of listening to English songs and speaking ability is 0.543. The result is categorized as moderate (0.40 to 0.59). It indicates that there is positive correlation between students’ habit of listening to English songs and speaking ability. In other words, there is another factor that can influence speaking performance, it is students’ learning strategy. The implication in learning and teaching that students can learn English based on what they are interested in and also teachers or instructors should encourage students that learning language can begin with their interest first, which is listening to English songs, and followed by integrating it to learning process.
