Abstrak This research used library research design. The objectives of this research are describing the steps of six previous studies on the implementation of Picture Word Inductive Model Strategy in teaching writing and explaining the reasons for the effectiveness of PWIM strategy in improving students’ writing skills. The data sources consist of Primary data taken from a book written by Emily F. Calhoun (1999) under the title “Teaching Beginning Reading and Writing with the Picture Word Inductive Model” and secondary data taken from thesis, skripsi and article of journals, as follows: Siti Amanah (2018); Ratna Faiza (2019); Meliasari, Ngadiso and Marmanto (2018); Zuraida Kartika, Sofian and Luwandi Suhartono (2013); Jernih Sinurat (2017); and Yulizar and cariyanti (2018). The result show that in implementing PWIM strategy we need to apply 10 steps: select and identify picture, make picture word chart, read and review the picture word chart aloud, read and classify the word, spell the word, add words, create title, generate sentences and paragraphs, and read and review sentences and paragraphs. Each researcher from secondary data apply different steps in implementing this strategy. Sinurat (2017) adopted the procedure from Calhoun (1999) while the other researchers adapted the procedure regarding to student age, student knowledge and learning environment. All of the studies showed that student’ achievement in writing descriptive text increased due to the use of PWIM strategy. The implementation of PWIM strategy in teaching writing is effective to the students because the strategy provides an attractive picture and encouraged students to think inductively. It also motivated students to be active in the teaching and learning process. As a result, students’ writing achievement is increased. . PWIM strategy has implications for teacher, school, level of students and writing itself. The teachers are required to be more creative in choosing picture as media of learning, the using of PWIM support the process of teaching and learning activities in school. In students’ level PWIM strategy can use to teach elementary to higher level of students. In writing it provides visual stimuli to students, so that student achievement in writing is increase. |
