Abstrak

An Analysis of Students’ Ability in Comprehending Narrative Text Reading: A Study at SMK Negeri 2 Palu under the Supervision of Dr.Hj.Sriati Usman, M.Hum This research aims at finding out the students’ ability in comprehending the narrative text reading at the tenth grade students of OTKP Department of SMK Negeri 2 Palu. This research focused on the students’ ability to comprehend generic structure(orientation, complication and resolution), to recognize word meaning (vocabulary), to identify moral value and to identify purpose of narrative text. The research applied descriptive qualitative. The population was the tenth grade students of OTKP department of SMKN 2 Palu. It was used total sampling, thus, all the population were taken as the sample of this reserach, 104 students. The instrument of the research was archival document. It was the previous students’ result of reading test. Based on the result of analyzing data, it was found that the tenth grade students of OTKP Department of SMK Negeri 2 Palu had low ability to comprehend narrative text. It was proved by their result of the test that only 41 students (39.42 %) from 104 students passed the test. Specifically, the students’ ability to comprehend generic structure of narrative text was low. It was found that only 47 students (45.20 %) from 104 students reached the minimum criteria. The students’ ability to recognize word meaning (vocabulary) of narrative text was also low. It could be seen that there were 54 students (51.93 %) had low ability. The students’ ability to identify moral value of narrative text is categorized high. It was found that 80 students (76.92 %) had high ability. Last, the students’ ability to identify purpose of narrative text was also high. It was found that most of the students,90 students (86.53 %) had high ability.
