ABSTRACT Vira Vazrina Thamrin (A 121 16 067). “Improving Reading Comprhehensionin Narrative Text of Grade IX Students At MTs Nurul Yakin Tondano Through Picture Series”. Skripsi, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Department of Language and Art Education, English Language Education Study Program, under the supervision of Mawardin M.Said. The problem highlighted in this research was the low of reading comprehension of first semester at 9 grade students of MTs Nurul Yakin. They needed media which offer to improve reading comprehension. This study investigates whether picture series can be used effectively on high and low motivated students in comprehending narrative texts. Picture series itself is a series of picture that explains about the events of the story that is why the researcher wanted to test whether picture series can help the students to improve their ability in reading comprehension or not. The objective of this research is to find out the significant effect of using picture series towards students' reading comprehension at grade Nine students of MTS Nurul Yakin Tondano. The research method in this study was quantitative research with one group pretest-posttest design. It was conducted from Monday, 3 August 2020 until Tuesday,18 August 2020. The sample of this research was IX class with 21 students, consisted of 9 males and 12females. The sampling of this study was purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher used pretest-and posttest. Every meeting the researcher gave different topics. There is significant improvement in the result of pre-test and posttest. The mean score of pretests is (47,85) and posttest is (75,95). The calculation result of t-test = 13,7 and t table with DF= N1, DF = 20, level of signification 5% in t-table 2,08. The result of T-test is 13,7> 2,08. So, arithmetical t- test was greater than t-table. By having calculated the data, it can be defined that there is an effect after applying the picture series for Ninth grade students of MTS Nurul Yakin, which can be seen from the students’ score.
