| Abstrak ABSTRACT HESTI DWI ASTUTI (A 121 16 019). This Skripsi is entitled, ABILITY OF GRADE X STUDENTS AT SMA NEGERI 3 PALU IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT, Skripsi, Teacher Training, and Education Faculty, Language and Art Education Department, English Education Study Program, under the supervision of Mukrim. This study aims to analyze students’ ability level and category at SMA Negeri 3 Palu in writing descriptive text. The researcher was used a descriptive research design. The research population was the grade ten students of SMA Negeri 3 Palu which consisted of 454 students. The sample was selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The number of the sample was 31 of class X MIA 2. The data were collected through tests about the descriptive text. The students were assigned to write descriptive text with several topics that have been given by the researcher in 45 minutes. The result of this research showed the mean score of the students was 63, Mode 75, Median 67, Standard Deviation 15.2. There were 6 or 19% of students got expanding level or good category, 8 or 26% of students got developing level or fair category, 17 or 55% of students got beginning level or poor category, and none of the students got bridging lever or excellent category and entering level or very poor category. However, after calculating the total number of students' scores and averaging them, the average score of students is 63. With the number of students' average scores, the researcher concludes that the students of class X MIA 2 were included into beginning level or poor category in terms of writing descriptive text.
