Abstrak ABSTRACT Diah Nurpratiwi H. 2020. An Analysis of Students’ Recount Text at the Ninth Grade of SMP Labschool Palu, Skripsi, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Department of Language and Art Education, English Language Education Study Program, under the supervision of Mukrim. This research aims to investigate to what extent is the students’ ability level in writing Recount Text, and to what extent the students’ recount text fulfils the recount text criteria. This research used a descriptive method research design with a mixed-method approach. The data were obtained by 20 recount texts which were written by the ninth grade Students. The data were analyzed by identifying students' recount texts in terms of the generic structure and the language features using transitivity of functional grammar. Students’ score classified into five criteria based on Harris (1969) skill level. The findings revealed that the students’ average ability classified into a good level. Furthermore, most of students’ texts were following the appropriate generic structure and language features of recount text. However, the data analysis confirmed that there are some students (good and fair levels) are weak in organizing the orientation part. In terms of language features, most of the recount texts still contained errors in the use of past tense and the use of modal auxiliary. This research suggests that teachers should help the students to enhance their writing skills, so that they are able to write a good recount text.
